Maximum wire length calculator

Rearranging the voltage drop formula gives the longest run that stays within a limit: maximum length = drop limit × voltage × 1000 ÷ (2 × current × resistance per 1000 ft), with 1.732 instead of 2 for three-phase. A 12 AWG copper circuit at 120 volts and 20 amps reaches about 45 feet at 3%. VoltageDrop shows the maximum length for the wire you pick below the result.

Lighter loads go further: the same wire at 10 amps reaches about 91 feet, because the drop is proportional to the current.

How the voltage drop calculator works

VoltageDrop uses VD = 2 × I × R × L ÷ 1000 for DC and single-phase circuits and VD = 1.732 × I × R × L ÷ 1000 for three-phase, where I is the current in amps, R the conductor resistance in ohms per 1000 ft and L the one-way length in feet. Percent drop = VD ÷ supply voltage × 100. The suggested wire is the smallest size whose drop is within your limit and whose ampacity covers the current (125% of it for a continuous load).

    Limits of this calculator

Results are estimates for planning. The calculation uses DC resistance and ignores reactance and power factor, conductor temperature below 75 °C, and derating for heat, conduit fill or bundling. Terminal temperature ratings, insulation type, local codes and the equipment instructions can all require a larger wire. Have a licensed electrician design and inspect mains-voltage work.

    Frequently asked questions

How far can you run 12 gauge wire on a 20 amp circuit?

About 45 ft at the full 20 A to stay within 3% at 120 V, or about 76 ft at 5%. Many circuits never carry the full rating.

How far can you run 14 gauge wire on 15 amps?

About 38 ft at full load for 3% at 120 V.

How far can you run 10 gauge wire at 30 amps?

    About 97 ft at 240 V for a 3% drop, or 48 ft at 120 V.
